The marriage might have limped along in its cold, polite way forever, if Sophia Lang hadn't come home.
She swept back into the Ashfords' world five years after leaving it, all warmth and apology and long looks at Julian across the dinner table. Old money adjacent, beautiful in the effortless way money buys, she slotted into the family like a key into a lock they'd all been aching to turn.
And Julian — the wall I'd lived beside for three years — cracked open for her overnight.
I watched it happen. I watched him laugh at something she said and realized I'd never once heard that laugh in three years of marriage. I watched Diana bloom, because Sophia was the daughter-in-law she'd always wanted: the right name, the right blood. "*She* understands us," Diana said at dinner, not caring that I was three feet away. "Some people simply belong, and some people are… let in."
Sophia was careful with me. That's the thing about the truly practiced ones — they're never cruel where it can be seen. She'd touch my arm and say, "You've been so *patient*, Ava. Not everyone could hold on the way you have," and smile so that only I could feel the knife in it.
One night I found Julian on the terrace and did the thing I'd promised myself I never would. I asked him. "Do you want me to go?"
He was quiet a long time, snow starting again over the garden.
"This marriage was never real, Ava," he said finally. "You know that. It was a contract my grandfather and some investor cooked up to keep the company alive. You got a name. We got capital. Nobody got hurt." He looked at me then, and for a second something flickered — guilt, maybe. "Sophia is… she's the one part of my life I chose. I'm sorry. I know that's not fair to you."
*Nobody got hurt.*
I almost laughed. He had no idea he was talking to the investor. He had no idea he was talking to the girl from the bench. He had no idea the "contract" he was so sure had cost me nothing had cost me fifteen years of hoping.
"No," I said. "I suppose nobody did."
And I went inside, and I took the scarf out of my suitcase, and I held it for a long time.
