Married to a Memory

Chapter 10: The Withdrawal

It took nine days for the Ashford empire to start coming apart, and I watched every hour of it from a glass office they didn't know existed.

On the first day, Vale Strategic declined to fund the next tranche. Politely. In writing. Richard's people assumed it was a clerical delay.

On the third day, we called the outstanding notes — the debt we'd been carrying for two years, all of it, at once, as was our contractual right. I signed the letter myself, under the name Richard had begged toward for two years without ever seeing a face: *A. Vale, Principal, Vale Strategic.*

By the fifth day, Ashford Group's stock was in free fall, three banks had frozen their lines, and a project in Denver had stopped mid-pour because the accounts were dry. By the seventh, the business press had a name for it: *the Ashford Unwinding.*

Richard aged a decade in a week. On the eighth day, he did the only thing left to do. He begged, through every channel he had, for a meeting with the principal of Vale Strategic. *Whatever they want. A board seat. Control. Anything. Just a meeting.*

David brought me the request, one eyebrow raised. "They have no idea it's you. Richard's assistant asked if 'Mr. Vale' would prefer tea or coffee." He allowed himself the smallest smile. "How do you want to play it?"

I turned the gray scarf over in my hands. Outside, the snow had turned the whole city soft and white.

"Set the meeting," I said. "At the Ashford estate. That dining room. The whole family — Richard, Diana, Julian. Tell them Vale Strategic's principal will attend in person. Don't tell them who."

"Ava." David studied me. He'd known me a long time. "Are you doing this to save the company, or to end them?"

It was a fair question. I thought about Rosa's soup and Ethan's terrace and a boy in the snow fifteen years ago.

"Neither," I said. "I'm doing it so that for once in three years, they have to look at me and actually see who was standing in front of them the whole time."
