Chapter 10: Mr. Cole

*"Mr. Cole"?*

The words dropped into the room like a stone into a lake that had been laughing. The music died. Every eye swung from me to David and back.

"Who's Mr. Cole?" Brett said, the glass tilting in his hand, wine spilling without him noticing.

David's calm gaze slid past him like he was an empty chair. "This is Mr. Nathan Cole. Chairman and CEO of Meridian Group." He set a card on the head table and held it up — my photo, my name, the Meridian logo. "The Chairman prefers to keep a low profile now and then. You're welcome to confirm it on the public registry."

He didn't need the TV, the second stack of proof, the theatrics. One card, one sentence, and the room did the arithmetic on its own.

Somewhere a chair scraped. Someone whispered, *the towers downtown — that Meridian.* And I watched the truth travel across forty faces like a change in weather.

Brett stumbled off the stage and came right up to me, staring as if seeing me for the first time. "Nathan… you're the head of Meridian? The firm that's about to invest in me?"

"Brett," I said, "an hour ago you told this room you know the head of Meridian. Sharp. Classy. Met him once." I tilted my head. "And you sat me by the restroom and laughed at my truck. How well do you know me, exactly?"

His face crumpled. He couldn't get a word out.

All around us, the people who'd laughed with him three minutes ago were studying the floor, edging their chairs away like he'd caught something contagious.

Vanessa hadn't moved. When I looked at her, she didn't try to smile. Her mouth opened, closed. Whatever performance she'd been running all night had simply run out of road.

I turned to Grace. She was holding her son, and in her eyes there was none of the shock on the other faces — only something tender and afraid. Glad I'd made it. Afraid the distance between us was too far now.

I wanted to go to her right then. But there was one thing to finish first.

"Now then," I said, and nodded at the file in David's hands. "Let's talk business, Brett."
